TUFFINS DO GREASE FOR CHILDREN IN NEED – Staff at Tuffins Supermarket in Knighton dressed up as characters from Grease last Friday to raise money for Children in Need. A total of £338.68 was raised. Supervisor Sue Reakes said: “On behalf of the staff I would like to thank all our customers for being so generous.”

CHRISTMAS BINGO – Knighton Under-fives will be holding their Christmas bingo at the Knighton Hotel next Monday. Doors open at 6.30pm, eyes down at 7pm. FARMERS’ MARKET – Knighton farmers’ and craft market will take place at Knighton Community Centre on Saturday from 9.30am to 1pm. CHRISTMAS FAYRE – The Macmillan Cancer Support Christmas fayre will take place at 3pm in the Church Hall, Knighton, on Saturday. Father Christmas will bring gifts for the children. If anyone has anything they can donate, doors will be open from noon. CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING – At the Catholic Church Christmas coffee morning, £300 was raised. Church member Jean Kilby thanked everyone who supported them on the day. POPPY APPEAL COFFEE MORNING – The coffee morning held by the Royal British Legion Women’s Section raised £137. Raffle winners were Penny Hughes, Peggy Cadwallader, Jean Kilby, June Ruff, Vi Brick, Liz George, Brenda Steadman, Kath Richardson, Pat Ball, Carole Oliver, Michael Conway and Hazel Edwards. Mrs Betty Capner thanked everyone who had donated prizes, those who helped on the day and all those who attended the event. BOWLING AGM – The ladies of Knighton Bowling Club have held their AGM. The ladies have had a very successful year. Captain for 2008, Sue Jones, said she had enjoyed the year and was grateful for all the support she had been given. The ladies achieved third place in the Mid-Wales league and gained a place in the finals of the Welsh Bowling in Tenby. A new treasurer, Gill Warrington, was elected after Pauline Parker stepped down. Pauline was thanked for all the work she had done. Secretary, Carol Didlick, was re-elected and the new captain for 2009 is Hazel Peacock with Julia Watts as vice-captain. During 2008 several new members were welcomed. WHIST DRIVE – At Knighton Bowling Club Ladies’ whist drive, the winners were: ladies – Vanessa Elphick, Ruth Wilding and June Williams. Gents – Ted Pugh, R A Jones and Anne Price. The consolation prizes went to Rose Parry and Johnny Bayes. The longest sitter was Julie Read, highest in the first half, Meryl Roberts and in the second, Dorothy Edwards. MC for the evening was Shirley Moorhouse, thanks were given by Linda Parker MBE and the prizes were presented by Jill Warrington. Raffle winners were Frank Evans, Vanessa Elphick, Ivor Jones and Kathleen Evans. The next whist drive will be held at the bowling club on Thursday, November 27, at 7.30pm. PRIMARY SCHOOL RAISES MONEY FOR CHILDREN IN NEED – Knighton Primary School pupils raised £45 by wearing something spotty to school and making a donation to Children in Need. The Friends of the School also organised a cake sale which raised £133. RAINBOWS MAKE THEIR PROMISE – Eight girls who joined Rainbows earlier in the year have just made their Rainbow Promise, and each received their first Girl Guiding badge. PICTURE PRESENTED TO MUSEUM – A picture of Presteigne Home Guard taken in 1940 has been handed to Presteigne Museum. The photograph belonged to the late Ronald Green. AIR AMBULANCE VOLUNTEERS – County Air Ambulance volunteers who work in the charity shop in Knighton went out for their annual meal last week. Co-ordinator Rachel Harvey thanked everyone for their support over the last eight years, adding that in that time the shop had raised about £46,000. Rachel also thanked Tuffins for its continued support. More volunteers are needed to work in the shop so that it can open for a few more hours a week. Anyone interested is asked to call in at the shop.
