EXTRAORDINARY MEETING – At the community centre meeting, a new committee was elected. The new members were: Penny Nicholson, Rob Barton, Lynda Wood and Justin Rees who together with the two Knighton Town Council representatives, Peter Reynolds and Sarah Scotford, will co-opt further members at their first committee meeting on Thursday, November 20, at 6.30pm. At this meeting, the new committee will then elect a chairman, vice-chairman, secretary and treasurer. If anyone is interested in the centre and wants to be considered for co-option please give their name to one of the new committee members or call 01547 528962 before the meeting.

JUMBLE SALE – Knighton Brownies are holding their annual jumble sale in the church hall on Saturday at 3pm.

CEILEDH – There will be ceilidh at the community centre on Saturday, November 15, starting at 8.30pm. Tickets for £5 are available from the Bookshop, Spar, Peldroed Bwrdd or by calling 01547 528385.

FARMERS’ MARKET IN SCHOOL – Knighton Primary School is holding a farmers’ market in the school hall on Thursday, November 20, from 3pm to 4.30pm. They are doing it as part of their learning experiences in maths, science, geography and DT. The youngsters will have their own stalls with cooking recipes, and if anyone is able to help them contact one of the teachers.

XMAS FAYRE – Knighton Macmillan Cancer support group will be holding its Christmas fayre on Saturday, November 22, at the church hall, Knighton, at 3pm. Anyone who has items they wish to donate for the event can take them to the hall from noon onwards.

TREF-Y-CLAWDD WI – On Wednesday, November 5, Tref-y-Clawdd WI members held their AGM. Secretary Shirley Moorhouse gave a report on the year’s events and Julie Read gave the financial report. Margaret Johnson was returned as president. All the other committee members were re-elected.

A game of beetle was then enjoyed by all. The winners were Jane Ellwood, Shirley Moorhouse and Margaret Pinfield. The next meeting is on Wednesday, December 3, at 7.30pm which will be the Christmas party. Members are asked to remember to bring along a small gift for the lucky dip. The competition for the evening is three homemade mince pies.

WHIST DRIVE – Knighton ladies held their latest whist drive at the clubhouse. Winners: (ladies) Vanessa Elphick, Connie Bright and Doreen Bowen, (gents) Ken Elis, Mable Evans and Shirley Moorhouse. Consolation prize winners: Meryl Roberts and Ivor Wozencraft. Highest in the first half: Mrs Myvill and highest in the second: Ted Pugh. Draw winners: Ken Ellis, Doreen Bowen and Sue Price. MC for the evening was Shirley Moorhouse, thanks were given by Linda Parker MBE and the prizes were presented by June Williams. The next whist drive will be today (Thursday) at 7.30pm at the bowling club.

OFFA’S MAZE TALK – The Offa’s Maze talk next Monday at 7.30pm in the Knighton Hotel will be by Michael Green on capitalism.

REMEMBRANCE AT WHITTON – The Remembrance Day Service at St David’s Church, Whitton, was led by John Clements. After the service, the congregation went into the churchyard where Major Alan Jenkins Royal Corps of Signals laid a wreath. Colin Pugh read out the names of those who fell in both world wars: Arthur George Wozencraft, Garfield Rees, Fredrick Homfray Davies, Percy Victor Davies, John Williams, Sydney Herbert Rollings, Thomas Edward Phillips and Rifleman Phillip Evershed Chapman. This was followed by two minutes’ silence and prayers.

NORDIC WALKING – At the end of October, Age Concern’s Powys Nordic walking group for the over 50s was launched at Knighton Sports Centre.

Nordic walking uses specially designed poles to enhance your natural walking experience. It is an accessible activity and something that can be shared by people of different fitness levels. Helen Anderson, social activities project officer for Age Concern Powys said: “We have had a tremendous response from people wishing to join the six-week course and we are now fully booked. ARMCHAIR EXERCISE GROUP – A new ‘fit and fun’ club has been launched at the community room, St Edward’s Close, Knighton. The club is a social activity for the over-50s which offers gentle chair-based exercise to music. This is a joint project led by Radnorshire Healthy Friendships and supported by Age Concern Powys. For more information contact Helen Anderson on the above number or come along on a Thursday from 11am to 12.30pm.

THE LEG CLUB – District nurses working in and around Knighton invited members of the public to a meeting to raise awareness of the new leg club to start officially in April 2009.

Founder of the leg club Ellie Lindsey said: “The club is to relieve suffering from leg ulcers and associated conditions and to educate people about leg care.” At this pre-launch meeting district nurses were also looking for people to form a committee to run the weekly club and volunteers to serve coffee and tea. The club would be at the Methodist Church every Thursday morning from 9am to noon and people would be able to just drop in when it suited them. Anyone interested in being a member of the committee or working as a volunteer please call 01547 529122.

COFFEE MORNING – There will be a coffee morning in the church hall on Saturday. Proceeds to the Catholic Church funds.

HOT SUPPER – There will be a seasonal hot supper at the church hall on Saturday, November 22, with music by Mervin Wilson. Tickets cost £5 each on 01547 520061 or 528260. Proceeds to St Edward’s Church.

CHRISTMAS DRAW – There are still some tickets available for the St Edward’s Church restoration fund grand Christmas draw. The draw will take place on November 29 at the annual bazaar. Call 01547 528605 for tickets.

NEW SHOP OPENS – A new charity shop has opened in Station Road. The shop will raise money for the Self Help Africa charity. The official opening party met to hear a talk from Elia Manda, the programme co-ordinator for the charity in Eastern Zambia. The ribbon was cut by Elia watched by Marie Gray who will run the shop with her helpers, Steve Langdon, Christine Lunt, Alison Cowan and other fundraisers and local people.

CYCLING THE LENGTH OF WALES FOR CHARITY – Following on from the off-road cycle ride earlier this year, a team of cyclists from Knighton who joined with a team from Kington and Lyonshall, took to the road again. The team cycled over two days on a route that was devised to follow the Offa’s Dyke path from Prestatyn to Chepstow covering a distance of 172 miles through stunning scenery and over challenging terrain. Mike Kemp, one of the main organisers, said: “Without the assistance from the Lions in Kington, who provided transport by Mr Paul Abel, along with his cycle trailer, there would have been difficulty in the back-up support we needed to complete the ride. My thanks for their help and support must go to the Lions.” The Kington part of the team raised money for the Lions. Knighton Cyclists raised about £500 and donated the money to Knighton Cubs/Scouts and the St Edward’s Church Fund. If you are thinking of getting on your bike please give us a call on 01547 520834.
