KNIGHTON DUPLICATE BRIDGE CLUB – The Knighton Duplicate Bridge Club started about 12 months ago meeting in the Knighton Hotel on Friday nights. Last week it held its first bridge drive which raised £390 for the Wales Air Ambulance. Results on the evening were: 1st, Rita Lawrence and Tony Davies 3080, 2nd, Stella Pink and Dick Kemp 2860, 3rd, Olive Williams and Joy Powell 1460, and 4th, Annette Watkins and Rob Watkins 1350. Closest to zero, Joy Link and Diane Kemp 50.
The club has had a very successful year, member Jack Lott has won the Mid-Wales Individual Championship held in Aberystwyth, the A Team of Kevin Collins, Jack Lott, and Margaret and Neville Richards have also started well in the newly formed Mid-Wales League by beating Castle (a team from Welshpool) 10-2.
CHRISTMAS CARDS HELP CHURCH – At a coffee morning held in the church hall, Knighton, there was a large selection of recycled Christmas cards made by church members and their friends for sale. The coffee morning and sale of cards raised more than £250 for St Edward’s Church Restoration Fund. Raffle winners were Jenny Inglefield, Neil Warrington, Edith Conway (2), Gwen Morgan, Pauline Parker and Doreen Aspley. Anyone wanting to buy cards can buy them in the church or call Jean on 01547 528260.
LUCKY SQUARES COMPETITION – The West Bromwich Building Society in Knighton held a lucky squares competition to raise money for the County Air Ambulance. A total of £100 was raised. Competition winners were: 1st, Caroline Penlington, 2nd, Anne Leighfield, 3rd, Jackie Lomax and Phyllis Edwards.
BAND’S AUTUMN CONCERT – Knighton Town Silver Band held its autumn concert at the community centre last Saturday. The band featured Melanie Rowe on trombone, Phil James on soprano cornet and Sean Milward on cornet, each receiving tremendous applause. The choir also featured two of their singers, Lydia Rogers and Rory Naylor, both giving very entertaining performances. The Training Band was not to be left out with Shane Davies on cornet and Liam Evans on trombone playing Any Dream Will Do. Band member Maureen Conway thanked all who were involved for making this a very enjoyable concert.
The Training Band has spaces for anyone interested in learning to play a brass instrument. The band rehearses each week at the church hall in Knighton on a Tuesday evening at 6pm or contact Cath on 01547 520076.
FRIENDS OF THE SCHOOL – The Friends of Knighton Primary School put on a Virgin Vie party with extra tables selling a variety of items. The event raised £310 for the school. Hayley Bright, chairman of the Friends, thanked everyone who helped and came along and supported them on the night.
WHIST DRIVE – The ladies of Knighton Bowling Club held their second whist drive of the season at their clubhouse. Results: ladies, Lillian Bennett (176), Doreen Bowen (169) and Linda Parker(167). Gents, Ted Pugh (168), Jean Burgoyne and Ken Ellis. Consolation prize winners were Julie Read and Anne Price. The highest in the first half was Janice Davies and in the second half, Hayden Jones. Thanks were given by Linda Parker MBE, MC for the evening was Shirley Moorhouse and the prizes were presented by Mrs Lillian Bennett. Draw winners were Sheila Jones, Robert Jones, Ivor Jones and Lillian Bennett. The next whist drive will be at the Bowling Club on Thursday, October 30, starting at 7.30pm.
FARMERS’ & CRAFT MARKET – Knighton farmers’ and craft market will be held in Knighton Community Centre on Saturday from 9.30am to 1pm.
TABLE SALE – Knighton 1st Scouts are holding a table sale at the church hall, Knighton, on Saturday from 10am to noon. There are still a few tables left at £5 each. Anyone interested should contact George on 01547 529173.
