POWYS Radnor Federation of WIs held its annual Christmas concert at the Everest Hall, Llanfairwaterdine, last weekend. Nine WIs took part in the concert, each doing their own bit to entertain other members. There were readings from Tref-y-Clawdd WI, Stowe and Stanage and Yvonne Mills of the Arts and Leisure Committee, poems from Grosvenor and Llanbister WIs, sketches from Howey and Tremont WIs and the others did a variety of seasonal songs. All the members sang Christmas carols accompanied by Carwen Maggs on the piano. The Federation Choir also sang some very nice Christmas songs including one called Sheep. In the interval there were refreshments and a raffle. THE annual meeting on November 11, was a business meeting to vote for the committee to lead our branch through the next 12 months. Our team, headed by Aida Harris as president, Therese Stockford as vice president, Nina Jones as treasurer and Joyce Griffin as secretary were all proposed and seconded and remain en bloc. Why change an engine when it’s running smoothly? The ladies have worked hard to find entertaining and interesting talks and our grateful thanks go to them.

ONCE again the canine report is good and it is Quella who wishes to woof lots of “thank you’s” this time as on October 31, she celebrated her 17th birthday! She received cards, pressies and treats of chews and ice-cream shared of course with companion Fay. Bless her she is wonderful.

Bartonsham Retirement Club They say the sun shines on the righteous, if this is true Bartonsham Retirement Club members must be a virtuous group as they have enjoyed beautiful sunshine on both the day trips this year. Early in the year they went on a tour of the black and white villages in the county, what beautiful scenery, and in the autumn a trip to Ludlow before returning via Bodenham to see their outstanding flower festival in the church.

THIS year’s tango ball was held last Saturday in the splendid Green Dragon ballroom. Word must have gone round after our last ball as this second anniversary ball was another roaring success. People came from ten counties spread over the west country, from Shropshire to Devon and as far east as Warwickshire. Music was provided by Leroy Tango Cat internationally known DJ, and live music from the wonderful Tango Fugitive. Tango workshops were led by Leroy, and by Isolde Kanikani, who flew in from Holland for the event, and her partner Eduardo, who also gave a scintillating demonstration-dance, giving the packed audience a breathtaking example of our dance - mostly dumbstruck and wondering if their legs could actually ever achieve such a position!

ON October 27, at St Johns Church Hall the last of the City WI Group Meetings took place which was once hosted again by Huntington (Hereford) WI. After supper, the speaker Mrs Jill Salmons, gave an interesting talk on her visits to South West China. She told of the many customs observed by the Miao ethnic groups of which there are three, Flowery Miao, Long and Short Miao. In all there are 56 ethnic groups in China. Mrs Salmons collects textiles of batik and brocading and embroidered fabrics, bringing with her many these wonderful delicately hand-embroidered costumes she had acquired on her travels. Young girls she said, like to make a new outfit for each major festival during the year. If her costume is very heavily embroidered it shows the young prospected bridegrooms that she is talented and does not spend a lot of time working in the fields and would make a good wife. Silver jewellery is also part of the costume which they cover themselves from head to toe, with necklaces, bracelets earrings, hats, headpieces with a wedding outfit weighing several kilograms.

Members of Much Birch WI were joined by husbands and friends at their October meeting for an illustrated talk by Mr. Jordan on Route 66, which runs across America from Cahicago to Los Angeles. Along the route, he showed slides of before and now; before the advent of Hollywood and the Cinema. As he passed through each state he told of the history, the struggle with Indians over territory, the result of the depression etc, all of which was of great interest. This Route is also the venue of many films and they had a glimpse of some of the famous stars of the Wide Screen and where their films were made. Mr. Jordan also played some appropriate music and reminded members of films such as "Meet me in St. Louis " and "State Fair" etc. with some old posters. Altogether it was a most entertaining evening, very much enjoyed by all.

THE speakers at our October meeting, Jane Layton and Caroline Bufton, explained how their business “C J Jewellery & Accessories” developed from their hobby of making costume jewellery, and in two and a half years grew into a successful enterprise. With advice from a friend with a business flair, they added scarves and bags, invented a logo and travelled round exhibiting at craft fairs and shows, gave jewellery parties (like Tupperware parties) in homes and WIs and now exhibit in permanent displays in local farm and craft shops. Several of our members were tempted to buy from the enticing display they had brought with them. Julie Button, our President, thanked them and asked them to judge our competition for “a favourite scarf”, won by Glenys Mills, with Irene Phillips second and Phyllis James third.

OUR first October meeting began with a “get to know you” session organised by Val Twigg. Being a large group (over 70 members) it is easy to talk to those people you know and not get to know other members. Judging by the amount of conversation, lots of new friends were made and everyone felt involved. This was followed by an excellent Harvest Supper organised by Doreen Foster, Betty Williams and other committee members; another opportunity for lots of chatter.
