County leads the way in carcass judging

Herefordshire Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs came away with five first prizes at the National Live and Carcass judging finals at the Country-side Live Show in Harrogate .

Teams took first and second place in the overall team competition, together with wins in the beef team and individual and pigs team and individual sections.

Teams of two members (senior and intermediate were each tasked with judging either a ring of four beef (live and carcass) animals or four pigs (live and carcass) over the two days of the show. The popular annual autumn judging was preceded by an event held at R E Williams’ abattoir at Weobley last month which provided a perfect opportunity for YFC members to practise judging skills – and the hard work paid off with stunning results.

The Herefordshire C team came first overall collecting the John Spear Memorial Trophy, while the beef team of Michael Hanson (Dilwyn) and Richard Garlick (Saltmarshe) collected the Smithfield Club Perpetual Challenge Cup for beef judging. The pig team of Matt Price (Pencombe) and Kamilla Bosley (Ledbury) completed the clean sweep when they landed the Smithfield Club Perpetual Challenge Cup.

Full results for the Hereford-shire teams were: Overall champion team: 1 Herefordshire C (Jonathan Rogers, Ledbury, Chris Watts, Saltmarshe, Matt Price, Pencombe, and Kamilla Bosley, Ledbury YFC); 2 Herefordshire A (Richard Garlick, Saltmarshe, Michael Hanson, Dilwyn, Sarah Wells, Hereford, and Robert Harris, Orleton ).

Beef (team): 1 Herefordshire A (Michael Hanson, Dilwyn, and Richard Garlick, Saltmarshe; 3 Herefordshire C (Jonathan Rogers, Ledbury, and Chris Watts, Saltmarshe); Beef individual: 1 Michael Hanson, Dilwyn (senior), 3 Richard Garlick Saltmarshe, (intermediate).

Pigs (team): 1 Herefordshire C (Matt Price, Pencombe, and Kamilla Bosley, Ledbury); Pigs individual: 1 Kamilla Bosley, Ledbury (intermediate), 3 Laura Jones, Hereford (senior).

Other members of the teams representing Herefordshire included John Hanson (Dilwyn), Ben Pritchard (Longtown) and Marieka Bosley (Ledbury).
