A FUNDRAISER who ran the London Marathon for a county charity after a hip operation enjoyed it so much he has signed up to run five marathons in five days.

Aside from taking part in the event again next year for Herefordshire Riding for the Disabled (HRDA) Douggie Glasgow will also run the gruelling Marathon de Sables across the Sahara Desert in 2011.

The 46-year-old raised £700 towards a horse, and used the challenge to restore fitness levels following hip surgery, after seeing HRDA in action at a charity event.

He said: “It was quite moving to see the kids and adults there having a fantastic time on the horses.”

He now plans to raise thousands for the organisation over the next few years.

Vice-chair Sally Stubbs said: “This is a gruelling marathon over five days and there are only 235 places allowed for the UK, Ireland and Israel. We hope that Herefordshire will get behind him as he prepares to raise several thousand pounds in the attempt.”

Mr Glasgow and Will Lindesay of Herefordshire Community Foundation, which part-funded new horse Murphy with a Sport Relief grant, helped welcome the animal to HRDA’s Holme Lacy centre. Murphy will join the other, specially trained horses at the centre to provide mental and physical stimulation for the disabled through riding.
