LEOMINSTER police are ringing the changes in a bid to stop handbag and purse thefts.

Shoppers are being given ‘purse bells’ to attach to their purses and wallets as police raise awareness of pickpockets and opportunist thieves.

The campaign is particularly targeting mothers who leave their bags, prams and pushchairs unattended.

“Theft of purses is not a major issue in Leominster but there have been a couple of thefts recently and we want people to be more aware of their property,” said Sgt Mike Doolan.

“Local people are reminded to be vigilant when shopping, be wary of other shoppers who crowd you, keep your handbag or shopping bags closed and don’t leave your purse in view.”

PC Tracy Lewis said the bells act as a deterrent to thieves and remind people to secure their purses and wallets.

“If you can hear the bell ringing, then your purse or wallet is not secure enough and you need to put it at the bottom of your bag, with the opening securely fastened,” he said.

“It would be very difficult for a thief to remove a purse without the bells alerting the owner and other shoppers to the incident.”

To obtain a set of purse bells, speak to a Leominster police officer or call Leominster Police Station on 0300 333 3000.
