LEDBURY shoppers could win a cash prize for staying local this Christmas.

Town centre traders are holding a £1,000 prize draw as part of their ‘Shop Local’ campaign.

Shoppers who spend in participating stores will enter the draw, which runs until December 18.

The winner will be drawn during the Medieval Extravaganza, to include late night shopping, mince pies, and lots of entertainment. Annette Crowe, owner of the Past and Present shop, said other prizes include £250 and a TV donated by Eager Electrical.

“We have launched this campaign to urge local people to shop locally,” she said.

“Often people look to shop under one roof, without realising the fantastic offers and personal service on offer in a town like Ledbury.”

This year’s festive period is crucial for traders with recession looming and Top Cross soon to close for water mains repairs.

The junction is due to be closed on January 5, but Welsh Water wants to spread some cheer by supporting the initiative.

“We have liaised closely with traders to plan the essential water investment scheme and we urge people to support the initiative now and well into the future,” said Peter Childs, Welsh Water capital manager.
