ONLY a select few get to be fat cats in their time but the prospect of owning one has just become a reality.

Hereford moggy Mason has been left on the shelf at Hay Cat Rescue after his elderly owner died.

The 20lb tabby was thought to have spent two weeks hiding behind a bath before rescuers took him and five others to Brookfield Veterinary Practice two weeks ago.

Volunteer Vivien Coombe said: “He’s the opposite type of cat that we get in that they usually need fattening up, we don’t know why he’s so fat - he doesn’t eat a huge amount but he’s not very active.”

His brother Fortnum and the others are with new owners but the eight year-old is yet to be re-housed.

“We are looking for a nice quiet home for him, he would suit an older person,” Vivien explained.

She also said Hay Cat Rescue is getting more abandoned pets than ever, with many owners claiming they cost too much to keep at the moment.

To help Mason call 01981 550 477. To help others, or to donate to the charity, call founder Kathie Wilks on 01497 821 401.
