HAY-ON-WYE and other borders residents are smiling even more than usual after Powys was voted the cheeriest place in the UK.
The town featured on BBC TV’s Breakfast Show last Thursday after researchers at Sheffield and Manchester universities found it the happiest area to live in.
Hay mayor councillor Peter Lloyd was interviewed live after the district topped a list of 273 considered.
Factors including employment, health and qualifications were also taken into account before Radnor, Brecknock and Montgomery came out on top.
Also in the top 10 were Manchester, West Lothian, Macclesfield and Nottingham.
Culture capital Edinburgh was named the most miserable, with the Rhondda Cynon Taff in South Wales close behind.
Herefordshire, south Herefordshire and Leominster came in at number 204.
