COMMEMORATIVE mugs to mark the coronation of King Charles will set a Herefordshire town back several thousand pounds.

Towns across Herefordshire have been busy preparing for the big event, which is set to take place at Westminster Abbey in London on May 6

And in Ross-on-Wye, children will receive souvenir mugs to mark the historic occasion.

A meeting of the town council's community markets and tourism sub committee on January 17 heard that three quotes for the mugs had been obtained.

"These comprised of £6 per mug plus £112 delivery, £11.98 per mug plus £1,197.90 delivery and £4 per mug plus

£100 delivery," the council's minutes revealed.

The mugs, which could include personalisation, would be distributed among all nursery and primary school children in the parish.

Councillors at the meeting unanimously agreed to purchase the mugs at £4 each, with some minor amendments to the design, subject to approval of the council's budget for 2023 to 2024.

The mugs will come to a total cost of around £3,000, with some 750 estimated to be needed.

A host of celebrations are planned nationally between May 6 and May 8, with the coronation of the King and Queen Consort taking place at Westminster Abbey on the Saturday morning, conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Charles and Camilla will arrive at the Abbey in procession from Buckingham Palace, known as “the King’s procession”, and after the service, they will return to the palace in a larger ceremonial procession, known as “the coronation procession”, joined by other members of the royal family

At the palace, Charles and Camilla will be joined by family members on the balcony to conclude the day’s ceremonial events.

Sunday will see “global music icons and contemporary stars” descend on Windsor Castle for the coronation concert which will be broadcast live on the BBC, while thousands of events are expected to take place in streets, gardens and parks in every corner of the UK.

On Monday, a bank holiday has been set aside for volunteering and is being billed as “the big help out”.
